I'm still buzzing from last night, a profound mix of exhaustion and exhilarating pride. If you’ve been following my journey, or the incredible work of Mobilize Recovery, you know that saving lives—specifically Narcan distribution—is a cornerstone of our mission. But last night was different. Last night, "Narcan at Night," a collaborative brainchild born at Mobilize Recovery 2023, became a tangible, impactful reality. And I was there to witness it, to be a part of it, and to feel the palpable shift in our collective fight against the overdose crisis.
I remember sitting in that room back in 2023, the energy of Mobilize Recovery crackling around us. Ideas were flying, connections were being forged, and the passion to make a real difference was almost overwhelming. Rob Banghardt tossed out the idea: "What if we took Narcan directly to people, at night, when vulnerability is often highest and resources are scarcer?" The concept was simple, yet revolutionary in its directness. It resonated deeply with me, with us all. It wasn't about waiting for people to come to us; it was about meeting them where they were, literally and figuratively.
Fast forward to yesterday. The dream nurtured in those Mobilize Recovery halls had blossomed into a robust partnership between Mobilize Recovery, the Shine a Light Foundation, and the Foundation for Recovery. Seeing all these incredible organizations, each with their own unique strengths, converge for this singular purpose… it was humbling. It was proof that when we unite, truly unite, there’s no limit to the good we can do.
As the sun set, a different kind of light began to emerge—volunteers, purple shirts, and the beacon of hope we carried with us. We fanned out into areas identified as high-need, places where the shadows of addiction often loom largest. The atmosphere wasn't somber or judgmental; it was one of compassionate urgency. We weren’t just handing out Narcan; we were offering a lifeline, a conversation, a moment of connection.
I walked alongside our teams, engaging with individuals, sharing stories, and witnessing countless small acts of kindness. Each time someone accepted a Narcan kit, each time a person nodded, understanding the importance of having this life-saving medication on hand, a ripple of hope spread. It wasn't always easy; there were moments of skepticism, moments of hesitation. But overwhelmingly, there was gratitude. There was a sense of being seen, of being cared for, in spaces where many feel invisible.
One interaction, in particular, will stay with me. I spoke with a young man, no older than my own son, who initially waved us off. But as I explained the simplicity of Narcan, how it could save a friend, a loved one, or even himself, his posture softened. He took a kit, his eyes reflecting a flicker of understanding, perhaps even relief. It was a small victory, but in this fight, every single kit placed, every conversation had, is a monumental step forward.
To think that this entire initiative, this powerful, life-saving night, began as a seed of an idea at Mobilize Recovery just three years ago… it fills me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride. Gratitude for every single person who has championed this cause, who has volunteered their time, who has donated, and who has simply believed in the power of empathy and action. And pride, immense pride, in the recovery community's ability to innovate, collaborate, and relentlessly pursue solutions to the challenges we face.
"Narcan at Night" wasn't just about distributing medication; it was about illuminating the darkness, about reminding those struggling that they are not alone, and about empowering communities with the tools to save lives. It was a testament to what we can achieve when we refuse to give up, when we refuse to let anyone be left behind.
We’re just getting started. The success of last night fuels our resolve to expand "Narcan at Night" and other similar life-saving efforts. Because until every person has access to the resources they need to survive and thrive, our work continues. And knowing the incredible hearts and minds behind this movement, I have no doubt we’ll keep shining that light, brighter and brighter, until the shadows finally recede.
